2 songs, 1 sample... part 10; Freddie Scott "(You) Got What I Need"

Freddie Scott "(You) Got What I Need"

Freddie Scott (April 24, 1933 – June 4, 2007)
was a solo artist from Providence, Rhode Island
who began his career as a songwriter for Colpix Records,
along with Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

His 1968 effort "You Got What I Need"
was sampled for the 1989 Biz Markie hit, "Just a Friend".
It was also sampled for Ghostface Killah's "Save Me Dear" in 2004
and by Ervin "EP" Pope on The Game´s cover of
Slick Rick´s classic Childrens Story
of The Game´s mixtape/street album Purp & Patron.

Biz Markie; Just a Friend (live in Amsterdam)

"Just a Friend"
is a 1989 comedic rap song by rapper Biz Markie,
in which he alternates between rap and singing.
Although Biz Markie had many hits to his credit
from the previous three years of his career—particularly
"Nobody Beats the Biz", "Pickin' Boogers",
"Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz",
"Something for the Radio", and "The Vapors"
to name a few—"Just A Friend" is his only
successful single in Pop,
reaching the #9 position on the Billboard charts.

The song interpolates the 1968 song
"You Got What I Need" (1968)
by the late singer/songwriter Freddie Scott,
whose basic chord and melody provided
the base for the song's chorus and made it famous.
Due to the widespread popularity of the song and
its influence on Pop culture, Biz was classified by
VH1 as a one-hit wonder, and "Just A Friend" was ranked 81st on
VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders in 2000,
and later as number 100 on
VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop in 2008.
Karma, a staff record producer for Cold Chillin' Records,
told Vibe magazine in 2005 that he produced the single,
but never received credit.
